    Dinner Plans

Over the last year, my partner and I have gone the full gamut of considerations re: where we want to live as a couple. We started last year with buying land and working with an architect on designing a new home, only to discover that housing materials costs were rising…

  • Home Body

I’m tired of not knowing who I am. Will I ever feel at home here? Will I always be out of sorts, on the periphery, alone? It’s not that I’m not given the chance to be loved. That’s not it at all. People show me in myriad ways that I…

  • Trappings

Something I’ve come to realize through (lots of) therapy: my childhood was defined almost entirely by the house I grew up in. I suppose that’s not that surprising of a concept. It’s most likely a recurring theme, maybe even one of the simplest ones a therapist can look out for.…

  • Where You Lay Your Head

Last week, I asked some online friends to tell me what they thought of when they heard the word home. I was curious what the answers might be, and wondered if there would be a wide variety of ways that people interpreted the concept. I was pretty surprised when multiple…

    Haunted

I’ve been thinking about how when someone doesn’t have a house, society often uses the word “homeless” to describe them. Thankfully, we have started to move away from saying “homeless,” instead using the word “houseless.” The latter is a much better description, because it’s entirely possible for someone to not…

    Down The Road

Last night, a powerful tornado ripped through a neighborhood less than two miles away from where I live. About thirty minutes prior, a tornado warning alarm had gone off on my phone. While I was a tad worried, I thought, “What are the odds?” I had already cleared any potential…

  • Rings On Her Fingers, Bells On Her Toes

As a child, one my favorite comfy pastimes was to lie in my bed, reading aloud to my cat, Amos. She (yes, Amos was a lady) was my best friend, and she would listen patiently for hours as I stumbled my way through my favorite books with her. My favorite…

    Home

Sorry to have been away for so long. I needed time to think. Things have changed drastically over the last two years. My last few blog posts here in 2019 and 2020 were somewhat prophetic. In particular, on March 10, 2019, I wrote that I’d had a dream I’d met…

  • Two nights ago, I had a dream that I was in a village square, and I saw a sloth on a chain. I started to walk over to the sloth, and then I realized that a chimpanzee was holding the chain. The chimp stood and faced me, baring his teeth…

  • After years of trying to read one book a week each week of the year, I FINALLY met my goal in 2019. Fifty-two books in 52 weeks was made slightly less difficult this year by reading a lot of ghost stories. Not exactly high-brow reading, but definitely the theme of…

I’m Nova

I have no “personal brand.” I’m not a girl boss, I’m not an influencer, and I don’t aspire to be powerful, inspiring, or rich. I probably can’t teach you anything, and there’s a good chance that there’s nothing at all of interest or use to you here. This is just where I come to talk about the random bits and pieces that make up my quiet life as a sober woman in her 40s. I’m engaged to the love of my life, have six (yes, SIX) indoor pets, and spend a lot of time gardening and hunting for thrift treasures. I also study classical voice (I’m a lyric coloratura soprano) and am deeply interested in all things spiritual and paranormal. Right now I’m trying to recover from career burnout and even out my personal energy, but my eventual goal is to become a medium and shamanic healer, using music to remind humans of the things that actually matter: connection, community, and loving all living things as though they were our own children. I may or may not talk about all of these things here (and sometimes all at once). Welcome!
