Chip Coffey posted this tonight on Facebook, and since this prayer is one of my favorite inspirational sayings of all time, I thought I’d repost here. As you know, I love St. Francis. I also love WWII history, and am a big fan of “Band of Brothers,” both the book and the TV miniseries. If you’ve watched the miniseries, you might remember the episode “Bastogne,” which highlights the company medic, Eugene Roe. It’s probably my favorite episode of the series, since the book doesn’t talk that much about Eugene, and it’s interesting to get an idea of what life was like for him as the medic.

The core of his duty as medic was to run towards the gunfire, into the explosions, straight for the bleeding and dying. He offered solace, companionship, help, a hand, a shoulder, a bandage, maybe some morphine in a very bad situation. The company medic is the face of hope for a wounded man, and it was interesting to see how he dealt with this incredible weight. In the episode, he calms himself by quoting a snippet St. Francis’ Peace Prayer: “Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.”

My heart clung to that saying, though it was years before I figured out where it came from. The rest of the prayer is just as great, and can be easily adapted to any religion (or lack of). It’s time for me to hit the hay. Hope that your new week starts with light and love, and you’re able to follow that thread all the way through to next weekend.

  1. […] If you’ve never watched Band of Brothers before, you should. If you have, you might (like me) have a particular interest in the Siege of Bastogne. This is one of my favorite scenes from the entire series, and it takes place during that important engagement. There’s something immensely powerful in the setting – snow and ice, imposing trees, darkness – and the emotion of medic Eugene Roe’s hurried prayer. I rewound the DVD over and over the first night I watched this, trying to catch the words and soak up the entire scene. Later, I googled this prayer and found out it was a snippet of the Peace Prayer of St. Francis. […]

I’m Nova

I have no “personal brand.” I’m not a girl boss, I’m not an influencer, and I don’t aspire to be powerful, inspiring, or rich. I probably can’t teach you anything, and there’s a good chance that there’s nothing at all of interest or use to you here. This is just where I come to talk about the random bits and pieces that make up my quiet life as a sober woman in her 40s. I’m engaged to the love of my life, have six (yes, SIX) indoor pets, and spend a lot of time gardening and hunting for thrift treasures. I also study classical voice (I’m a lyric coloratura soprano) and am deeply interested in all things spiritual and paranormal. Right now I’m trying to recover from career burnout and even out my personal energy, but my eventual goal is to become a medium and shamanic healer, using music to remind humans of the things that actually matter: connection, community, and loving all living things as though they were our own children. I may or may not talk about all of these things here (and sometimes all at once). Welcome!
